Routine Eye Exams Specialized Eye Exams Routine Eye Exams Consist of Several Elements Refraction This exam evaluates whether you need glasses to see for distance and/or close work. External Evaluation This portion of the exam evaluates structural or functional abnormalities of the orbits and lids. Pupil The physician evaluates the size of the pupils as well as how they react to light. Extra-ocular muscles Do the eyes move
together in all positions of gaze? Slit Lamp Exam A biomicroscope is used for a magnified evaluation of the anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions of the eye. Retina Evaluation During this portion of the exam the physician is evaluating the optic nerve, macula, blood vessels and peripheral retina. Intraocular Pressure An instrument called a tonometer is used to measure the pressure inside the eye. This is a very important element in diagnosing and treating glaucoma. Specialized Eye Exams Visual Field Using a specialized instrument, this exam shows how wide the field of vision is in each eye. This is important in evaluation and followup of glaucoma. It is also valuable in evaluating certain neurologic diseases and it can help diagnose difficult-to-explain visual loss. At Davidson Eye Clinic, we are pleased to have the latest visual field technology in the Humphrey 745 Field Analyzer. With this technology, visual field testing can be performed in 5-7 minutes per eye instead the traditional 20+minutes per eye, adding to patient comfort while still yielding accurate results. Fluorescein Angiography This is a study of the blood vessels, optic nerve and macula. A fluorescent dye is injected in a small vein and pictures are taken through the dilated pupil of the eye as the dye passes through the back of the eye. At Davidson Eye Clinic we are pleased to have the newest Topcon Digital Imaging System which gives instant pictures, eliminating film development time, and giving the physician, patient and family instant information. This technology can often allow diagnosis and treatment on the same day.
